Now that it's pool weather I'll burn a lot of that beer off just doing laps.

Much ado has been made about Tactical Carbines and Rifles in the last 5 years, with many gun owners sinking thousands of dollars into their EBR's of choice, buying Kydex and Codura by the boatload, and it seems to me that often these people are "Keeping up with the Joneses". I've never been accused of being terribly progressive when it comes to small-arms, but my reasoning for that is a function of my experiences as a war-fighter, and my lack of ability to see the worth is always having what is considered "Cool" in the OPERATOR magazines.

Don't mistake me, I love AR's and AK's, they are damn fine weapons, but at the end of the day, my shooting philosophy does not center around Mozambique drills and room clearing, but the venerable Bolt Action Rifles.

You see, it is a function of Ballistic Advantage, that is, having the ability to engage a target outside of the range he is able to engage you. Much has been said about a recent article entitled "Taking Back the Infantry Half-Kilometer", but for me, I don't believe I every gave that up, for I strive to extend my territory to the 1000m level, and beyond. The most appropriate weapon for this long-distance engagement is a full-caliber Bolt Action Rifle.

I will divide this course into sections

I: Picking your Bolt Action
II: Picking your Optics
III: Accessories
IV: Employment of your Bolt Action Rifle

Note that this is not going to be a class on shooting. Moreso an intro course into someone looking to purchase a Tactical Bolt-Action

big-bore rifles weigh 20+lbs for a reason... to eat up recoil. I don't think you'd be able to hold the proposed rifle while firing.

The goal was never to make it controllable. I just think it would be ridiculous.

I'm thinking that the biggest weight penalty would be the chamber, because that absolutely can't be skimped on. Everything else can be massaged to fit the requirements.

Right, so I've been here since about a little after the beginning of the month.

Chow at the DFAC's a bit better than the one back at Bliss. King Crab legs and hangersteaks on Friday nights. I hear it gets even better downrange, and even if you're not on a FOB the outposts give you the mad pogue bait. The servers wear paper hats, bow ties, and black vests.

The Great Steak & Potato Co. is better than any one I've eaten at Stateside. Also, Mirinda is the best orange soda I've had, even better than Slice. Subway's has this one kind of beef that's thinly sliced and it looks but doesn't taste like pastrami. They put balsamic vinegar on it, and it tastes excellent.

Lots of British Army and RAF boys and girls out here. They've got more beret colors than we do, that's for sure. One of their logistics sergeants said they're on their way out, as are our neighbors up north, but I'm sure that's already in the news by now.

Permanent party is mostly sustanainment brigade and fellow MPs as far as I can tell, with Dustoff and some chopper WOs. Some Navy EWOs. Some Air Force, since there's F-whatevers doing barrel rolls on occasion. When we touched down in the airport, I ran into some Marines that were on their way out; they're the only ones I've seen so far, since most of 'em are probably in A-stan.

Last-minute training and classes are done with, and we're done guarding Class One and crew-serves since the connexes are moved again, so I've suddenly had a lot of free time on my hands. It's hottest around 12-1pm, but since I can wear PTs a lot now, it's not so bad. There's pallets of bottled water every ten paces.

Gym's nice. PX is overpriced but go figure. Quite a few 24/7 facilities. It is fun to go for a morning run on Eisenhower since you never know who you'll run into (AF girls are pleasant jogging partners).

TCNs are in a surprising variety running the AAFES and miscellaneous shit. Not just Arabic and Farsi; I'm hearing some Tamil, some Urdu, even maybe some Hindi, but there's only so much I can recognize. AT&T is the only serv

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a guide on how to convert a Saiga. Serv benevolently decided to move it to the archive. Serv also somehow managed to lose every post but the first, rendering the guide kaput. I asked him on IRC what to do, and he said to re-dump it in /k/ for him (it was originally in /st/). So here we are. Eighty or so posts will follow. This is good, because after a few test firings, I found it necessary to re-work two of my steps. I would have had to re-do the whole guide anyway, so no harm no foul. Here we go:

I finished converting a Saiga. I thought I’d put all my work together for you guys, as a guide. Let’s start with some background information:

I never intended to convert my Saiga. I bought it, because I had been looking for a traditional grip semi-automatic rifle in .223 that wasn’t a Ruger or Kel Tec. I bought the Saiga online, because the price ($425 shipped & transfer fee) was win, the model for sale had magazine dimples, I couldn’t find the model I wanted in my area, and most importantly, they have a great reputation for accuracy, fun, and durability.

The problem was how it handled. I bought a model with a 20.5 inch barrel, since this was to be a paper/squirrel puncher, but the balance of the rifle was akin to a club. Completely front heavy. In addition, the sights were four inches further from my eyes because of the traditional style stock, making it hard to get a good sight picture. I also noticed on my first range trip that the rifle shot two feet off at fifty yards, and at 100 yards I couldn’t hit the paper. I learned a hard lesson in why you should buy an AK in person: Canted sights. Later, you’ll see just how canted they were.

I decided to convert it as part necessity and part fun summer project. It took me about three weeks working on it here and there; if I do it again I can cut that time way down with what I learned doing this one. If you undertake this, know this: No two Saigas seem to be the same. Some have different receivers, and some different barrel diameters. It seems some are made from old Bulgarian .223 patterns, some from new Russian patterns, and some are a Frankenstein mix of the two.

Every natural and manmade disaster to date has overwhelmed the communications capabilities of both the private and public sector in the affected areas. This is something that just happens. Everyone thinks they have to contact their family/friends/whatever NOW to make sure they're ok, and the phone system gets clogged. Things start happening quickly and need responding to, so all of a sudden 911 systems are overwhelmed, as well as the radio networks for emergency services now have tons more traffic due to tons more situations requiring some level of response.

What this means for us as OPERATORS is that your most obvious standard communication methods will most likely fail.

What's non-standard for the majority of people? Radio.

There's tons of different radios, for tons of different frequencies. Some reach further than others, and some are more expensive than others.
Lets go over them and figure out what they're good for.

FRS Handhelds:

These are your run of the mill Walmart Motorolas.
They typically get at BEST 5 miles of range under good conditions with fresh batteries.
The meager range is accented by the fact that they have weak power, limited amount of channels, and any asshat can go buy one.

On the civilian side, DF'ing is pretty easy even just with handheld yagi's. I don't think that I can discuss military DF so I'm not going to.

If you intend to be found by people DF'ing you, transmit long and don't move from where you were. SAR direction finding is pretty simple and is easily done especially if the aircraft has a directional antenna on them.. or uses terrain to lock down different areas as having weaker signal.

To mister mod my radios to talk on a shitton of freq's, you're talking about seriously breaking US Law, therefore breaking board rule #8. take a break.
No. 10854 ID: f4bb9f
>>14538

I'll expand on this some. Using a highly directional antenna you can get a direction of the transmission source, then move that direction and continue listening for another transmission or a continued transmission. It gets a bit quicker if you have multiple stations listening because then you're actually able to generally triangulate, more accurately when you have more spacing given standard civvie grade equipment.

The concept is used with avalanche beacons bigtime, most every beacon has a directional antenna so that you all as a group can find whoever got taken down... usually folds down around the outside of the housing.

You could even do it with a handheld scanner if you so desired, with a directional antenna.

Wikipedia has a very well-written article on the subject too, actually.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direction_finding

Hope I didn't drag this OT too much.
