My fellow OPERATORS, the state of the chan is…. Meh.

I say this not to be a Debbie Downer, but to frame in your minds the questions we must answer as a community as to what those who come here to browse or post value and what can or even should be done to maintain and transform this site.

Financially, we are in alright shape. There was a lukewarm response to the initial donation drive, but more people signed up for the Patreon than I thought. Provided the patrons keep paying, we have enough to ride out the rest of the year on our current server.

However, our current server is still relatively expensive, especially for the traffic the site gets. Operatorchan takes up a lot of server space, and while as discussed previously having a dedicated server is nice for reliability, the utility and cost just don’t match. I will be working with Godverdomme to find cheaper options either with our current hosting company or a different one depending on what’s available. My goal is to reduce costs to below the current level of patronage. This is not without challenges, as the current build of the site has been basically chugging along untouched for years now. Moving to a new server will not be a copy and paste operation. I will post updates on that as it happens.

A note on paypal. Paypal is dicks. Our saved jewgolds are safe, but I don’t see paypal as a viable long term option for collecting donations anymore. I will be researching alternatives. In the meantime, patreon can deposit directly to opchan’s bank account so that seems to be a viable option for now. I just had a lengthy phone conversation with an Irishman named David who tells me that their “compliance division” is going into overdrive to combat money laundering and he’s fielding tons of calls about limited or locked accounts. If they want to make the service unusable, I am happy to oblige. I was actually worried this would happen eventually which is why we have a backup financial system and our threads won’t be repo’d.

So, we must change the server situation. Also in the technical realm, Kusaba X continues to be utter shit. The longer it runs the harder it is to keep it from falling apart and you may have noticed some content loss on older threads. It will fail. An alternative platform must be identified. This is no longer optional. I will have more free time starting in March and I will be able to devote more time to researching and implementing something new.

In the meantime, I will be creating a facebook group as an emergency backup. The operatorchan facebook page is doing pretty good. 1.6k followers and 62k reach with 27k post engagements in the last month. It’s a fun place.

I’ve been able to conclusively link high reach facebook posts with bumps in site traffic. Not huge, but measurable. Since facebook is easy, Mammoth and myself will be continuing to post shit. Facebook is also dicks though. They gave me a $10 coupon to use on boosting posts then when I tried to use it said I couldn’t boost weapons related content. Jerks.

So then. The lights will remain on for the time being. We have funds for another year and the server/platform combo might not shit the bed before the money runs out.

If anyone is interested in revitalizing or making operatorchan great again… I need help.

The other admins are largely absent or unable to assist, and there are very few active mods. We don’t have a competent developer at the moment. Godverdomme is, as always, still lurking in the shadows providing essential support. Without his help the site would definitely be dead or exist in a very different form since I would have had to restart it from nothing.

I need volunteers.

I need a chief moderator to wrangle the users so we don’t devolve into shilling, flame wars and tedious metathreads (which I will be locking. All metadiscussion should go in this thread from this point forward). I need someone to look at shitfests like /n/ and try to whip it into something sensible with new rules and consistent enforcement.

I need more mods who are willing to log in and wade into the shit.

I need people to help with outreach on various social media platforms and to look into which ones we SHOULD be on to draw good people we want to talk with to the site.

I need someone with development experience to look under the hood of this creaking relic and tell me if it’s worth salvaging.
If people are willing to step up, perhaps we can build ourselves back up. If not, operatorchan will fade, as it has been fading, into the mists of the internet.

Or one of you could hack up a chick and post your manifesto here. That’d help.**

Anyway, let’s open the floor for questions and comments. I believe your newest mod Senseless had a question about Anime.

Forever yours,
Jedi Dachshund

I'm glad to hear the lights will be kept on.
This place is getting dated and I don't doubt that there's a hell of a lot that goes on behind the scenes to keep this place running.
I want to express my sincere appreciation for you and all the mods and supporters who keep this place up despite the relative few of us who frequent it.

I think we are in need of a pretty drastic change, though i'm unsure what form that might take. Social media isn't much of a viable option as I assume everyone here agrees that mods and content cops should be in house as opposed to zuccccc.

I wonder if a brainstorming session of sorts might produce a few ideas. Either here, on facebook, if necessary on IRC, or wherever. There seem to be a whole lot of militaristic, ethically questionable gents on numerous facebook pages that keep getting zucc'd, maybe start a recruiting campaign there.

In any case, this joint is still pretty near and dear to my heart, it's been pretty good and I think it can have a good future if we figure some shit out.

Suggestions:

>Give mods wider discression in banning people who consistently troll, flame, and cause disruption on the board. Base it on conduct, not ideas or ideologies. If they can't lurk and at least try to get along and assimilate, show them the door and don't use kid gloves about it. America is for Americans. Operatorchan is for Operators. "Assimilate or fuck off."

>Look into softserve ads in 8chan's /k/ board. Advertising outside sites is welcome on 8chan, and after a bit of filtering out faggots with corrective mod action we could draw some good new blood. There are some damned smart Streloks floating around on there.

>Push the facebook thing. I hate facebook personally, but tons of people use it and if it works, it works.

>Use the Opchan Twitter (if we have one, I thought we did) and get someone on staff to volunteer to do some grade-A shitposting on it. Get followers and tweet about happenings on the board.

>Secondarily, use the Twitter and Facebook to network with major names in the gun and military world. Invite veterans to come here. As it gets bigger, use social media to do small charity drive events for veteran causes. Spread our reputation and do good deeds all at once.

And if you want the place cleaned up and running smooth in a week, make me a mod.

Yes. Fill out this poll:

The public-board anime/mlp ban is seen as little more than a tradition among the staff. It may be brought to an end.

Don't you do it, OPERATOR!

>>108469

Thanks, your appreciation is appreciated. I have noticed that a lot of weapons pages get cut off at the knees when they reach a certain size and reach. We ran into it with the operatorchan page because they thought we were selling guns and I had to get angry with their minions. They refuse to "verify" the page even when I provide them with all the proofs they request that I own the site and pay the bills. It's ridiculous.

A brainstorming session is a good idea. IRC is best for such things and we even have a channel we can use.

>>108470

I also appreciate you volunteering again, but it's simply not going to happen. You create good content when you feel like it and you're not especially dumb, but your reputation proceeds you and I've witnessed most of it personally so.... no. I know you disagree, and feel free to tell me why in an email or hop on IRC to discuss.

As far as advertising on 8chan, feel free to do so. I do want to leverage social media heavily, just need more trustworthy bodies to do it. We do have a twitter with a good number of followers but I wasn't getting the same level of results from it as facebook. We also have an instagram and a subreddit. All of these are potential avenues for growth.

User:
- Contribute useful or interesting content.
- Be civil, and neighborly.
- Get involved and organize fun things for the community.

Janitor:
- Remove spam.
- Remove off topic posts.
- Remove insults without content.
- Spoiler images which are sexualized, or gore.

Mod:
- If a user is particularly a dick, janitors can ask mods in irc to watch a particular guy.
- From then on if he acts like a dick he gets a 1 hour warning ban from a mod. If the bad user come an hour later and act a dick in the same thread, give them a 1 day ban. No longer. Week long bans disrupt discussion, considering how easy it is to evade a ban anyone using permabans has failed as a mod.

Me:
- Spread the word about my board, start fake flamewars so more people will come there.
- Implement various filters.
The site I'm on lets free hosting, you guys worry about money more probably.

First off, I fuckin told ya so. I saw this all happening years ago and took steps to head it off and was harangued for doing so.

Now onto useful solutions.

1) Just drop the #operatorchan channel on irc. It was a bad idea and does no one any good to give the impression of a dead community. Bring back #/k/ advertising.

2) OPchan discord server. I tried setting up a PBE one but that's fell unused. Most the large chans and /k/ facebook pages have their own large discord servers with hundreds of users. It costs nothing to run and the software is under constant development.

3) Advertising combined with heavy moderation to filter out the trash. I tried this back then, I got yelled at for it. The theory is still sound and I think it could work. Now a days we have many other avenues for cross-promotion. It's not just a few *chans anymore. It's a culture.
The Operatorchan and Payback enterprises facebook pages need your support with content creation and sharing. If we can get stuff shared onto the larger pages we build user base.

4) Posting. We just really need existing users to post more instead of lurking. I'm guilty of this as are most of you reading this. It has to stop. This is the biggest issue we face, full stop. No one will participate in a dead site, so even if we have few users the illusion of active discussion must be up-kept.

5) I don't know if romonov keeps the PBE store up anymore but more patches would be nice. Patches seem to be the in thing right now.

>>108482

1.) Yeah

2.) Set one up brah

3.) That's what I'm saying. Need bodies to run accounts, or I guess in March I will set it up so I can blast content out on multiple platforms

4.) I have some ideas on this point with posting discussion seeds when posting is low. Just got to post shit that moves people to comment.

5.) Romanov like many of us is busy with life. I don't have a problem fronting the cash for patch buys if you fucked all buy them

I think patches and merch could be pretty big. Like I posted in /g/, there are some cool fuggin patches floating around right now with nearly daily patch threads on /k/. This is the first microstep to fixing the site.

Everyone in this thread needs to go lurk on military websites, find something interesting, and post a new thread in /k/, /v/, /vg/, /t/ and /n/.

If most of the current threads get bumped off by new ones, maybe this site has a chance.

I get it man, i'm no fan of facebook or twitter either, but we can't sit as sticks in the mud forever. It could help to have some new blood or something.

I hear you, but the lamestream social media has won. People browse those sites endlessly and don't give a second thought to random imageboards unless they are an oldfag and specifically search them out. Marketing is marketing no matter the product. Perhaps we could have curated or stickied threads at the top of the boards, really good threads that the staff believes exemplifies something great. Threads like that would be the first things people see clicking on a board and maybe will grow from that. Plus it will give people who show up here something excellent to see that might grab em by the pussy and keep them here.

We have a Faceboob and Twitter page, maybe post about the threads with links to get people from those sites that might browse our pages there to come here to check shit out.

Maybe if someone volunteers have someone manage our social media accounts, try to drive up traffic on them to drive up traffic here. Maybe not do the comment on a post or video and throw a link to here type of thing or spam fuck other chans like Anontalk but I'm sure there is something someone who knows social media a bit could do to spread the word we're here, we're gear queers, get used to it.

/vg/ has been realistically dead for a while, on the discord server point we should look into who is running the opchan group on steam and work at contacting people and getting games together, and an active user base in the chat, would be another good way to get more people involved again.

start spamming steam friends, i have something like 50 people that i play with weakly if not daily on steam, in games of Squad, Insurgency, warthunder, world of warships, fractured space, EVE, and so on all games where the user base would most likely fit in our community we just have to get them interested
and working together.

how do the polls usually go on the site? it may bee interesting to do one that helps us get more information on the current demographic of the site, who we are currently drawing in and who we we are missing out on.

also i would help out with the discord server but i hve been working out of hotels as of late and the internet has been absolute dog shit, if we need more money i can afford to up my donation on the patron i just figured we would hit $70 fairly quickly and that more than 7 people would throw money at us,

we need more people like clio, dissenting voices we cant be an echo chamber, that being said i have always found people here to be fairly rational when discussing topics and staying neutral........ that being said it seems less so lately. so ya more discussion less yelling in news and talk would be nice, obvious problem with that being people dont like to be told they are wrong so how do we not drive people away when trying to make a conversation civil,

alright im going to stop now im rambling

I think all of these other accounts need to remain ancillary to a main imageboard.

Reddit is ok, but the mods are fascists. Facebook is less ok and it's a giant scheme to extract money from you, so under any permutation these options need to be secondary feeders to a main site where we retain control.

No lie, on fiscal things I'm strongly right and social things I'm left. Still I'm fairly big on people expressing their own opinions and would probably only intervene when someone is being pants on head retarded or inciting a flame war.

I disagree with the "reddit" template.

I know I may speak only for myself, but regardless of how dated the imageboard may look, in my opinion it is pretty much ideal for posting images/video media and general discussion. It's friendly to older devices and new ones alike. It's extremely easy to look for and browse old things (or on cellphones because it's light on bandwidth), it's simple and straightforward to follow discussions. I go to tmblr, reddit, facebook, and twitter and I usually just ragequit not because of the content (as all of those things do have gems in the rough), but because they're just straight up harder to browse/find/organize/search/etc. I'm pretty sure I'm just retarded but that's how I feel about internet formats.

Sure, we could use a less aging and half-broken board code than Kusaba X, I wonder if we could cannibalize 8chan's board code. It's ok right?

>I believe your newest mod Senseless had a question about Anime
I feel that we should ban anime/mlp if it's shitposting smug reaction images or whatever. I don't think it should be banned if there's weapon-related discussion around something that takes place in an anime or something and an example picture is posted. The problem with that is how confusing and grey-area that'll be for newcomers or when there's something semi-related and a mod has been having a bad day (like say we get a bunch of people posting anime bullshit and there's one random serious thread about some anime thing and the latter gets caught in the crossfire). Not sure what to do about that.
>> No. 10951 ID: b70387
>>108548
This is pretty much exactly the situation that got me thinking about the usefulness of the anime/mlp ban. In the 97 Chi-Ha thread in /k/, >>/k/102258, >>/k/102435 saw the anime in the OP, and asked if the anime ban had been lifted, posting anime of a guy with a howitzer barrel for an arm or something. I banned him, and it felt inconsistent to not also ban the OP. In IRC, I was told to consider the amount of weapon content in the picture when making a decision like that, and that the 57mm shell in the OP's picture made it sufficiently weapon-related. That is, as you said, kind of arbitrary.

I'd be a lot happier as a mod not banning anime or mlp at all. A shitpost is a shitpost, regardless of the art style. I don't get why we ban these things in the first place, beyond it simply being a personal preference of the userbase here. Thus, the poll.

Ok. So

1. NSA, et al. want to "collect it all".
2. It stands to reason that they want the most results from the least amount of effort.
3. We know that they already have real time interception capabilities from internet backbones, i.e. they have "backdoored" the internet at the backbone level in the U.S.
4. It's therefore not unreasonable to imagine a not too distant future where they routinely institute an attack like the following on a large scale:

Alice wants to connect to Bob's webserver. Bob's webserver communicates over plain old HTTP. CIA (NSA) sees the connection request in real time and commences a MITM attack. The traffic between Alice and Bob gets routed through CIA (NSA) and is altered to transparently serve a browser exploit to Alice.

HTTPS would provide some level of assurance against this kind of an attack (assuming it's properly set up). I'm not saying OPchan is a high enough priority target to warrant active high levels of surveillance by alphabet agencies - but the point is that you don't want to be the low hanging fruit, here.

Honestly the only problem I see arising here (assuming the Agency that cares is listening) is if someone posts some OPSEC type stuff about themselves.
SSL won't fix that. Besides I'd imagine most of the 3 letter agencies have easy to use back doors to get around common security such as SSL.

If we are really worried about security here we would get a private server (not virtual) running either Hardened Gentoo or OpenBSD complete with user registrations, vetting new users, etc.

Not worth it. Hell there are only a handful of us that MIGHT be on the very bottom of some ATF or FBI list. None of use are cool enough to be on a CIA or NSA list.

As promised here is a breakdown of our financial position.

Essentially this is what happens if all the patrons keep paying and no other expenses other than the server are incurred.

Paypal is still being a dick but as you can see they are letting us go about our business.... I honestly don't expect that to last.

Patreon deposits straight into the bank account and it's all set up with my info so there should be no question of money laundering. I would prefer if you are going to donate do it this way. If you absolutely don't want to commit to a monthly payment, email me and you can send money to my personal paypal which I will transfer to the bank. We can also work out other methods, in the past I've accepted google pay donations and that worked out alright. I will work with you if you want to give operatorchan money.

For the love of all that is holy do not undo the public anime/mlp ban.

If the admins want to increase the social media engagement of Operatorchan, do not throw out the one rule that keeps this place looking as sane as it can.

A public anime board might be okay, but it would have to stay there. No cross posting into /k/ or /t/ and the like. Compartmentalization of it will atleast make the site more palatable to more people, which would be the goal of social media engagement. It also keeps things like Senseless's situation happening. Yeah there could be issues with it but less than if you gave the janitors an ambiguous rule (all of us who've been here a while should remember the troubles with mods and ambiguous rules). Giving people a narrow lane with complete freedom is easier to manage than giving people a huge lane with a bunch of rules.

MLP should stay kill-on-sight. This place was insufferable before that was nixed. Anime was getting bad which is why the rule was enacted in the first place. It may have been an over-reaction, hence the hidden board, but it definitely wasn't in regards to MLP.

The poll is currently:
- 46% to ban anime and mlp
- 41% to only ban mlp
- 13% to not ban anime or mlp
which means 54% of people favor allowing anime, while 87% of people want to ban mlp.

There hasn't been an active mlp thread in the zone in awhile, so maybe the fanbase is dying down a bit.

At the end of the day, we are an imageboard. Who are we more likely to attract, arfcommers or a bunch of gun-owning weebs?

Those really aren't the only two options though. Honestly I think this site was at its best when the site was mostly former/current service or people intelligent/knowledgeable enough to pretend to be one, who were sorta weebo faggots but not necessarily the sort that had pillows of their waifus.

Aka the Gen Kill et al stream days.

Now we'd be hard pressed to grow and maintain that kind of crowd, but I'd steer towards that kind of crowd and pick up the not so serious arfcommers and weebos along the way. A diverse user base is necessary for health and growth. Despite everyone's bitching having people like Clio around is good, keeps us from just devolving into arfcom-lite.

Some of you might disagree with that, but realize there's a lot more of the world out there than just the US. Foreign operators are more likely to hang around if the chan doesn't devolve into /The_Donald or /MURICA. Foreign operators are cool because they have different tech and experiences, which is interesting to learn/talk about. Motherfuckers, we almost started a naval PMC with operators from Finland, Norway, Canada, shit I even think one of them was South African. That's some cool shit, real life PBE shenanigans.

So yeah, went a wee bit off topic but I hope it makes sense within the given context. My support for a public anime board vs repealing the Ani-Ban wholesale is just based on our experiences leading up to the Ani-Ban; there was a lot of friction over the ambiguity of the rules leading to people questioning the mod staff in almost every /t/ thread.
>> No. 10982 ID: b70387
>>108615
I agree that the site benefits from having a variety of posters.

Having an excess of content-specific boards led to stagnation and ultimately the removal of a number of boards just last year. An anime-specific public board would be a step backward, especially when the zone can serve that purpose. My concern with the anime ban is how much it might stifle discussion and how difficult it is to properly enforce. If the ban is lifted, people might briefly celebrate with anime all over the place, but I don't anticipate that after that, anime would in any way dominate discussions on the public boards. In the zone, where it's allowed anywhere, anime is only posted outside of the anime and stream threads occasionally.

We're probably going to leave the poll up for the rest of the month before we make a decision on this.

>Get OPERATORS to come here and post
>By inviting non-OPERATORS who will start endless reams of shit with the OPERATORS who do try.

I understand what you're getting at man, but get away from the meme that "divserity of opinion" means "people with nothing in common whatsoever." Opchan has a bedrock - a geekish interest in all things guns and military related. Expecting people to share that bedrock is what helps everyone get along. At the end of the day, we always have that one thing in common that holds us together, and that's what lets ''actual'' diverse opinions exist. Because it created a community for them to exist ''in.''
>> No. 10984 ID: 1d521e

I'm not suggesting that at all, though I get how you could have that impression by referring to Clio specifically. I meant that more in terms of fostering a diverse political spectrum that doesn't just throw "hurr durr marxism" at anything remotely left-leaning. Hence the references to foreign operators. They're foreign but still operators. Hence the thing in common. Operator.

Be that ex/current service or an interest therein, there's a wealth of cool tactics, technology, and different kinds of crazy they have to offer that might be completely turned off by the toxicity of "American-style" politics that pervades /n/ and /t/.

Dumb question because long absences: Have we had any issues with our non-US users?

I remember that Armor got shat on one time for being Israeli and I and some others called that shit out but I can't think of any other occasions. FPoP was almost universally liked, as was Yattuwort and Armor in general, as far as I can remember.

Are there metrics for non-unique returns? Aka what's our retention like? If we want content, our user base needs some level of continuity I would think. That drives discussion and participation, which is kind of my point re; /n/ and /t/. But lurkers are an issue everyone faces so I digress.

I was the one who made the thread about how OPchan became a leftist/hipster circle jerk and forgot about it til now. 8ch /k/ probably helped contribute to OPchan going on the decline besides the constant shilling by people like Clio. Someone who pretended to be a girl on the internet was more important than other OPchan users, and you dug your grave by choosing people who have no interest in guns (I remember she was even banned once or twice for anti-gun posts years ago) and just out to start shit over what OPchan used to be.

Wrong.

We actually come here because America is the freest country in general and specially with firearms. I personally like the principles America is based on Obviously ignoring the identity crisis its going through since WWII. "The Donald" doesn't bother me anywhere near as much as OPENLY GLORIFYING SYSTEMS OF GOVERNMENT THAT WRECKED MY COUNTRY.

Only retarded Americans (or possibly other westerners) like Clio actually think that something better exists outside US borders.

Part of the problem is we have very little "baseline" to compare to. When the site started it was far slower than it is now, but then shit started happening and we got tons of websluts. Traffic boomed, the servers broke, and the rest is history.

For the past few years things have been relatively stable as far as traffic though it is on a steady downward trend - and posting has dropped off in the past year a bit. There are around 300-400 posts per week with about 1,750 unique devices visiting the site in the same timeframe. So there's that.
