A time of New Year's Resolutions and Change (TM) is upon us again, gentlemen. In the past years, we've gone for the Keep Calm and Carry On approach. This year will be different.

What we aim to do is to replace all three current administrators, as well as make some changes to the moderator staff. We've long thought about what would be the best way to put this into action, but we never really found a good way to do it. We decided to put it off, until we found a better solution. This has however led to a stalemate. We've now decided to go with the "least bad" approach we could think of to regain momentum.

So how will this be set into motion? First of all, we're asking for volunteers for the three open administrator slots. Everyone is welcome to place their candidacy (this includes current mods), but for obvious reasons you must have (had) an active role in the community that has been recognisable enough for us to know you.
The administrators carry the responsibility to keep OPchan running (though not necessarily technically) and together they decide the direction into which to take OPchan. Practically this means drafting moderating rules which are enforced by the moderators, making advertisement deals, making sure the bills get paid, organising donation drives and being the primary point of contact for OPchan. Although money will be part of your responsibilities, it's not a direct concern right now since OPchan is in fine financial health.
From the list of candidates, the current OPchan staff will elect the new administrators. If there is a tie, the current administrators will act as tie breakers, using their casting votes.

Once the new administrators have been elected, their first task will be to go through the list of volunteers for the moderator positions and appoint those they think fit the bill. The new moderators will complement the current ones.

Candidates for the administrator or moderator positions can say so in this thread (be sure include your email address) or mail me directly if you prefer to keep things under wraps.

Good luck, merry xmas & a happy new year to all.

Hey: unless you want opchan turning into some /gg/ auxiliary, I suggest passing on Acid. Not because he'd be bad at nuts and bolts but because this community would become a smaller version of kiddie /k/ with who he'd bring in.

Do you want the guy who supported a "nigger tax" on firearms running the only decent gun related chan?

Guys, please specify if you're volunteering for mod, admin or both. :)

Since I've gotten questions on IRC: I'm not going anywhere. Regardless of the outcome, I'll still be around to help out. I'm not leaving. You're not getting rid of me that easily.

>>92618
>Not so fun being the ring master of the shit circus is it?

It's not that. It's just that we initially designed this to be run by 3 admins. With SwissGuy stepping back and Seraph being too busy irl, that makes me a little dictator. Which is the place where we didn't want to be.

Our goal when serv let OPchan die, was to save the site for the sake of the community. The new team started from scratch and tried to bring the community a stable site with clear rules and fair moderation. We wanted it to be a site where everyone had a place and could speak their mind. We wanted to offer the community certainty in terms of the site's existence and transparency when it came to how donations were spent.

I think we did that, for the most part. Sure, we occassionally dropped the ball.
But in the end, none of the admins back then expected to be in their position for life. Our goals were mostly short term survival and long term stability.

Now it's time to see where the future will take us.

Everyone who has posted long enough to be known some has some controversy inherent to them by trolls and whores and trollish whores.

There is no way around this. Acid Mangina has his fair share because of some of his more outlandish views but so would I, thou, Bat Guano, and anyone else who's name isn't Anonymous.

Could lead to drama, yes, but also paints a bullseye on the assholes who make the drama over tripfriends.

Besides someone shouldn't be barred just because they have their detractors nor should we pull a Sony and bend over backwards to accommodate little fat asian kids or anyone else who acts like cunts.

>Even if I wanted a mod position you know that wouldn't be a good idea because of said shitfests. You don't need the drama

You and Acid Mon already attract a crowd of drama breeding detractors just by typing out "I think this blah blah" with you names attached. Being in a mod position might incur more of the wraith of those petulant bottom feeders who get their jollies harassing people on the lines but that isn't really your fault nor Acids unless you think you guys are to blame for pissing people off for speaking your piece.

>Acid as a mod, even working in good faith, would attract the sort of crowd that'd spoil the vibe here

Assuming you meant what I think you meant you have something of a point in regards to Acid Man attracting Acid Man-ish men towards our wayward sphere, as one would have to worry about I bringing onboard nerdy as sin Space Marines with a hard-on for chainsaws or you letting in Jamaican psychics or Greek muses or Michigan cities, I've got enough faith in Acid Man to not abuse his position and enough faith in whomever else we elect to kick him to the curb if he did.

Note this isn't an endorsement by me for Acid Man or you and certainly not the douchebag Doomguy, I'm merely saying as I said before that Acid Man nor anyone else should be automatically barred because of the douchebags they might attract by their presence

I've been lurking and occasionally shitposting opchan for a long ass time. I don't trip or really intend to start, but I suppose for this purpose you'll need something to identify me with.

There are a few others that have mentioned something similar, but basically if you'd like I could make myself be available for cleanup of spam or CP and the like. Like a janitor or something. You wouldn't even have to pay me.
But as far as modding goes, I don't think I could really be consistent with judgment calls. Hell, I'm barely concerned about the rules as it is. Basically as long as real people and Bat Guano "Real People Edition" 4.6.3 are making the posts, I'm comfy.
I'm on some months more than others, but I could probably be helpful. Sometimes.

If you're interested let me know, and I can probably scrounge up something to prove I'm not a complete shithead.

Why not just finally kill off opchan? It's been a good run but this place is far past it's prime. It's gotten to the point where you can barely distinguish this place from 4chan's /k/, aside from the higher amount of circlejerking, especially when it came to the SJW horseshit. There's been no (even slightly) interesting, original content come outta here in a long while, it feels more like reddit in a chan format, including the regurgitated maymays and the "look what I did on this other website ha ha so funny" crossposting.

That crowd already exists here. You deal with it. Acid deals with it. Trolls are going to troll.

I don't really have an issue with Acid being made mod. Mainly because I know if he started being biased and non-objective in modship he could have it revoked. So could anyone else.

When you consider that most of the personal judgement calls on OPchan probably come from /n/ and people trying to skirt the rules; but the vast, vast majority of moderation being removing spam and banning bots and stuff. Acid Man knows that if he starts unfairly banning people due to differences in opinion or person bias it won't go on for long... So I don't see an issue.

Also, I hope Danderdude considers applying. I haven't seen him around much, but he's a reliable guy and seems reasonable.

Mammoth and Alpha Hotel Actual would also probably be good additions to the mod/admin team as well. Whether they want it or not, I dunno, but I think they'd do a good job.

>I'd be interested in hearing more about being an administrator, time commitment wise anyway. That feels like a job I could do, and already kind of do IRL.

That really depends on what aspirations you have for OPchan and what role you want to play in the admin team.
If you're practical, you follow up on the bills getting paid, respond to requests and complaints, make sure that the mods do not overstep their bounds and enforce the rules as agreed upon.
You could also look for ways to get new people to the site, organize events (shoots, donation drives,...) and so on.
If you're technical, you could make sure everything works, that backups are properly being taken, plan for updates, maybe improve the site a bit or migrate the site to a different host if need be.

There is no set amount of time you need to put into it, but if you think you don't have the time now, I'd advise against running for admin.

>>92711
>Are we allowed to nominate others?

>>92713
>MFW - I don't even know what does it take to be a mod

You enforce the agreed upon rules and try to check the site (and reports) whenever you can.
The hardest parts are:
1) making time to check the site (pref also parts of the site you're not interested in)
2) knowing when to be strict but fair and when to let things slide
3) thinking up funny ban messages
4) not become pic related

You're the token tumblrina that only gets a slap on the wrist if you act out, if that.

A goal of the new administration would probably be more consistent moderation.

It's difficult now because as GVD mentioned two admins are basically out of the game and so are quite a few of the mods. It's a skeleton crew and that makes it very hard to move forward.

vid related, skeleton problems.

I'll vote for whoever pledges to rid /vg/ of this terrible, embarrassing gamergate shitshow sticky as their first act in office. I mean, it was vaguely almost nearly relevant to the board, at the very beginning, but it almost immediately devolved into a slurry of screencaps of boring, frivolous Twitter slapfights between the two worst clicktivist groups on the face of this green Earth: virginal redditor/4chan dweebs, and tumblr SJWs.

I'll throw my hat in the ring for modship, since I've calmed down over the past few years and don't really start shit like I used to. And also because I've personally met a pretty large number of people from this place (17, at last count), and most of them would give me a good reference as to good man status.

>1) making time to check the site (pref also parts of the site you're not interested in)
Not hard to change, I can do that at least once a day.

>2) knowing when to be strict but fair and when to let things slide
Probably more strict than lenient, I'm not a fan of letting trolls derail discussions with cheap shots.

>3) thinking up funny ban messages
I don't claim to be a comedian, but I can try.

>4) not become pic related
I can at least promise to explain bans, and will leave bans posted instead of simply deleting threads and/or locking them.

>But I have zero coding skills, so yeah I'm still interested.

It's a handy bonus since it's what OPchan lacks most, but by no means a requirement.

>>92731
>Why? What's the point of this? I don't think this is a good idea. Particularly because we"ll just get a bunch of new mods with their own inconsistent styles.

Why? Because currently OPchan is kinda frozen. I can't take make big decisions because there's no other admins to vet them. At least I can't without turning into serv anyway. So at the very least we need new admins.

As far as mods are concerned, new mods means increased likelihood of divergent moderation styles, but it's up to the admins to lead the mods and councel them into being more uniform in their punishment and enforcement. Some old mods have drifted away (like balci) and others are less active now.
Since new admins likely also means new rules (like loosening up /n/ again?), the old mods also need to adjust.

Either way, every now & then, our OPchan has to be refreshed by the blood of idealists and old administrators. ;)

Just commenting and not suggesting you revert it, but I think one of Servs' biggest adminship fuck ups was making /n/ a general news board instead of a weapon-related news board. /n/ as it is now has attracted trolls and I think is more trouble than it's worth.

It got worse when /n/ was made to have stricter standards. Now /t/ is almost the /n/-lite board.

The problem with stricter standards and a more focused news approach is there is less room for discussion. There aren't exactly a massive amount of weapon related things in the news except mostly the latest mass shooting and the latest wallet raping gun scare. Such things are already discussed for the most part anyway.

Being limited to only that sort of things would make /n/ pretty dead. Nobody wants to discuss the latest school shooting over and over and over and goddamn could you motherfuckering Columbine wannabes just kill yourself rather then fucking over everyone else and over and thats it. Thats boring and would just be the same things discussed repeated over and over and over. Also over.

"I think people getting shot is bad", "we are going to get blamed", "this sucks", "the NWO/Jews/anti-gunners actually did this", "better lose your guns in an untimely boating accident", and of course "just when was trying to buy parts". That is pretty much the conversations in a nutshell.

I ain't saying we should branch out and discuss every little news event, the goings on of British Parliament and their tax on tea or the lives and times of a Siberia goat herder, but we should not be laser focused either.

I suppose a balance needs done. We're doing okay, trying to focus only on national and international events rather then grannies in Hoboken and saying no to substance-less personal insults, but there is probably still room for some improvement.

One of the reasons I think this whole idea is good, try some new shit for /n/ and elsewhere. Might not like some of it but we won't know until we try.
>> No. 5495 ID: 626b5e
>>92765

Actually, the "Grannies in Hoboken" thing I kinda disagree with. This is a great outlet to share the kind of stories that otherwise don't get national or international attention. Anyone can go to their favorite media mogul outlet and see all the day's national headlines, but a lot of the little local stuff people were posting from their own sphere of influence was content that I'd otherwise not be reading, since neither I nor most people go searching around everyone's local paper just to glean more knowledge about the day to day state of affairs in the world.
>> No. 5496 ID: 626b5e
>>92766

I'll expound; To be honest, it feels a net loss, not getting people posting their local grannies in hoboken stories and adding their local insight. This was content that one could find here presented in a concise and direct fashion, which was not readily available elsewhere.

Instead we're stuck, basically, with our own private commentary section on insert national news site here, which rarely adds anything insightful or esoteric about these issues, due to the outright saturation already.

Not to say that there's no merit in discussing the large issues, just that I feel more was gained from getting locals' input on more unknown events.

I know the "Grannies in Hoboken" thing came about because of certain people screaming "DON'T CARE NOT RELEVANT TO MY LIFE!" but to those of us who literally cannot stop sucking up any OSINT and HUMINT bits that may possibly augment our strategic and tactical level understandings of the world around us and the systems of interactions between the individuals and groups occupying the myriad regions of the Earth... it's almost heretical to say "Don't care to know ____." Knowledge is power etc etc.

Or maybe I'm wrong and the future is regurgitating the same fucking content blurbs from your national media outlet of choice with a twitter/facebook level of purpose consisting only of spouting our opinions, with no actual discourse or sharing of intelligence or insight.

>> No. 5498 ID: 626b5e
>>92768

Seems drastic, and would make for 2 rather slow boards and everyone arguing in /pol/... which by nomenclature alone would cause search engines to bring a bunch of mouthbreather basement dweller conspiracy theorist 14/88 types to our door.

Maybe we should just relax the rule about local news a bit, and encourage people to use it also as a way to share their local insight about the things going on around them. Mostly that will open the doors to more useful things.

There's no reason a thread about someone opening a new Home Depot in Iowa would actually harm anything anyways, it'd simply get pushed off the front page with maybe one or two funny replies. As such, I don't think it'd really need that much monitoring as to relevance level.

Sort of a self-sorting thing, stuff too useless and boring will just attract no attention and the OP will go away feeling the shame and embarrassment that they actually posted about 2 for 1 cheese at their local supermarket.
>> No. 5499 ID: 626b5e
>>92770

Besides, /n/ really isn't the point, the boards in the main site section are the important bits, and they generally run smoothly anyways. We should probably stop spending so much time and attention on /n/ and /t/, which are there for laughs, trolling each other boredom alleviation, and occasionally some useful info gets put in there to make it sorta all worthwhile .

Actually to hell with it, I'm in favor of loosening up /t/ a little bit, and removing /dmz/. The only thing /dmz/ contains that couldn't be fine in /t/ is pone and furry and banime stuff, which tbh those people have their own boards for and should do that there, the fact that we're providing bandwidth and hosting for pone porn is extra heretical.

Other than that, the only thing it contains that couldn't go in /t/ is irrelevant shitposting.

No, getting rid of /dmz/ is an awful idea.

DMZ acts as a pressure valve for bullshit and shitposting and porn that first time visitors can't see. Get rid of it, and we're going to start looking like every other chan out there.

Or y'know, we could just say a hard NO to that crap outright. They have their own chans for it. They can do that there, and post shit that isn't horrifying here.

I would financially back this site if I knew my money would not be supporting the degenerate habits of people touching themselves to pictures of grotesque anthropomorphic monstrosities committing bestial pedophilic acts. The people involved in such things should take it elsewhere.

I'd imagine zero tolerance for such things is a better alternative.

You have a point but the problem with reporting on local shit is for most people its either going to wind up as just weird news (especially for the members posting stories from Florida) or just news stories that people can't really comment on or connect to. Say if I post a news story about the New River Gorge festival and suicides or a story about here on Mars City some motherfucker ordered chainsaws for a place with no goddamn trees, seriously see no way whatsoever chainsaws can be of use here, none.

Whats there to really comment about beyond "huh, dats interdasting"? No real discussion can come of it beyond point and laughing at the absurdity of some people and the incompetence of supply.

>>92776
We want people to stay here, not cheat on us to get their porn, random bullshit, or venting done elsewhere.

Yes DMZ gots them ponies but it also has alot of good things, some funny things, and some downright disturbing things. It helps keep the board mellow, we can have a laugh about stupid shit, calm down some from some of the more maddening things we discuss, even just post stupid ass colorful cartoon whorses if thats your thing.

Sure we might not like a cum splattered rainbow ponies but it doesn't really hurt us or effect the board any beyond making you see if for a split second while scrolling past if you haven't hide it.

Its also a place to post interdastin local stories for everyone to point and laugh at if they are interdasting enough.
>> No. 5507 ID: 5b9651

Not to be a smartass, but "why?"

If its posted in DMZ we can shitpost about it, derail the thread freely, use anime reaction images, call each other niggers, etc. etc. etc. and just generally have a better time overall while discussing the same subject.

Extra triple double heretical. Even making me glance at that accidentally and ruining my appetite for the nice lunch I'd been planning, is grounds for summary execution for all parties involved.

No, they don't, because the other chans aren't opchan. You can't just jump onto something else and have the same group. Your group's the entire point.

I see your point but if the same topic can be discussed in /dmz/ with increased potential for lulz and no restrictions on what you can and cannot post, versus another board with more moderation, then /dmz/ is the clear choice. Even just for all the fun shit that everyone here seems to look back on so fondly.

I agree with this, even a sticky of local stories of self defence/defence with a firearm that never ever get media attention beyond the local region. If we can make an aggregate of those stories it's a great counter balance to the ignorant gun prohibitionists who spout off about how 'ccw wont work' cuz 'lol how many mass shootings have been stopped by ccw? zero! hurr hurr..'

Hold on a minute, aren't we all putting a little bit too much faith into some mod/admin changes being the silver bullet to re-engergize and invigorate this chan? The reset option has been discussed a lot and honestly I think it has merit. Probably the best way to disincentivize posting actual content there - you still can if you want to get the scat porn replies you are all fiending for, but with the knowledge that it will be gone shortly, you might post a serious thread elsewhere.
