Since the discussion came up on IRC and we got talking about it, why the hell not make a thread of this?
We were talking about how hardcases can be a pain in the ass, and how good reinforced/padded rifle bags can be pretty great.

Personally I'm looking for rifle bags for both my Sig551SB/Vz58V (about as large) and my AI AT. The "difficulty" here is that they all have folding stocks & I think it's retarded to buy big bags and not take advantage of the folding mechanism. So the bags need to be shorter & wider to accommodate the folded stock.

AI AT with 20" barrel, additional butt spacer & Steiner M5Xi 5-25x56mm scope:
Extended stock: 101 cm / 40 inches (informational)
Folded stock: 82 cm / 32 inches
Height: 27 cm / 10.5 inches
Thickness: 16 cm / 6 inches (without bipod, since it can easily be slipped off)

Sig 551 SB with 14.3" barrel & Aimpoint CompM3 red dot:
Extended stock: 84 cm / 33 inches (informational)
Folded stock: 63 cm / 25 inches
Height: 24 cm / 9.5 inches
Thickness: 9 cm / 3.5 inches

Obviously, some extra room is needed for padding & fitting.

You guys have any bags you like close to these measurements?

I'll need to check the height because that looks like it might not really fit that well. If it's only 10", it won't fit the AI AT.

Also some cheap suggestions:

Downsides appear to be, less padding, probably unable to fit mags into the pouches and perhaps not optimal for folding the stock?

But now on to a personal favorite:

Another one would be:

Came across another cheap shit option: Condor 36" Rifle case.
13"H x 37"W x 3"D

haters gonna hate

Almost identical voodoo bag

36" long x 13.5" tall x 4.5" wide

Clearly going to have a LOT of room for scope & everything, where many other options are questionable.

Whoops, that should have been the double variant for extra depth.
13"H x 37"W x 4.5"D

Pretty cheap, but not sure about Condor's rep.
People seem happy with it though.

This is draw from personal experience: The soft case with those slick vinyl material tend to get ripped open by the rifle's muzzle device (AAC Brakeout broke one of my case's inner).

AI AT doesn't have a muzzle brake & the Sig 551 is birdcage-ish.

I'm not really concerned. Though your AAC Brakeout doesn't really look sharp.

So, I finally received my Condor 151-002 bag.

Quality seems alright at first glance. There's some things I would've designed differently, but it seems alright overall.

Nothing wrong with it other than that they seemed to have mounted the backpack straps upside down compared to the pics on the website, but they work both ways. I prefer to carry higher rather than lower, so I swapped them around. That way I could use it on my motorcycle.

First thing I did was get rid of the MOLLE pouches on the front.

(excuse the poor pics, sun is down, lighting is shit, had to use flash)

Here's the rear with the backpack straps. The straps can be taken off entirely or clipped in half and then stored in a hidden compartment on the back.

It should probably be noted that the front pouch is large enough to stick in an entire Vz58V if you wanted to. So pretty large. Also has 2 document style pouches with velcro in it.

But does it fit the AI AT 20"? Why yes, yes it does.
The pic is with the bolt handle still in the rifle too. I guess in actual usage that would come out and keep the back more flat.

With the AT in it, I wouldn't put a second rifle in the bag though.

The biggest gripe here would be the straps. I might sew something on to make them different in order to fix the rifle snugly in place instead of loosely.

Same thing goes for pretty much all adjustable straps on the bag btw. Only a few of them have elastic bands to keep the slack in place. I'll put on some more or sew some in place where I know I don't need adjustment.

It can easily fit the Sig 551 SB and Vz58V simultaneously. It'll likely see some use for that as well instead of my bulky hardcases (which frankly are huge overkill for what I do with my guns in transport).

As always though, the proof of the puddin' is in the eatin'.
