Hello all.

I'm trying to find a new handguard for my AR. I'm not terribly picky but do specifically want a few features:
Free Float
Cannot be used as a cheesegrater.

I'm looking at pulling the trigger next week or so on the pictured Yankee Hill but would like other recommendations.

Need some more details:
Do you want a system like keymod or m-lok?
What is your budget?
What length handguard are you looking for?

If you're on a budget and want something 'good enough', Yankee Hill and Midwest Industries are ok.

How about one of the new ALG economy rails? I built two rifles using their fancier version with what I'm assuming is the same barrel nut/lockup system and I actually greatly prefer them to my more expensive Midwest Industries Gen 3.

$80-$90 with free shipping

Mister, what about weight? Some models are lightweight tubes, some are pretty beefy.
>> No. 106672 ID: 6ef9f1
No strong opinion on the two, though I've heard M-Lok is better.
Budget is sub 200 before shipping
Rifle length. I have an "18 barrel.

Not overly concerned, though light is nice.

I too dislike picatinny bullshit everywhere, and have an ALG emr v1 handguard. I highly recommend them.
The one already linked, or the EMR V1 M-LOK is what you are looking for if you don't want any picatinny. The EMR V2 is what you want if you want an iron sight on the front. You will need to buy the little purple wrench separately. The barrel nut is 7075 aluminum, the rail is 6061. Very lightweight setup.

There is one downside to these though, due to the close proximity to the gas tube, and the lack of picatinny rails that act like heatsinks/standoffs, these handguards can become uncomfortably warm fairly quickly. This can be mitigated with some covers and/or gloves.

They also look a little silly with paired with a really thin pencil barrel like a faxon, though this is true with most handguards that aren't the Midwest industries LWMG3. Little man in a big coat.

Apex Handguard's gator grip was one I was looking at but doesn't meet your $200 before shipping requirement

Faxon's Streamline are pretty nice, I've build two pistol upper with the 9" one

Yeah, always had a weak spot for that one too. Gator grips may not be the newest stuff around, but I really like it.

The format of Reddit looks stupid. A thread picture and topic but the responses don't have thumbnails for any attached pictures. Perhaps they did not want to look like another 'chan board, but it looks like jumbled garbage.
>> No. 106741 ID: 09c7e0
way, way back when, before 4chan was started up the first time, the first imageboards only had image posts in the OP. replies were text only. thats how the name image-board got put in place, each thread was a discussion of the op image back in those days

i just wanted to mention that fact, its not relevant to a discussion of reddit. reddit is FB level of pleb majority rule. god it sucks shit. plus it has that social network aspect too. i am ashamed to admit that i have a reddit account, but i'm willing to do so to mention that i am being consistently stalked by ex-coworkers for two different former places of employment on my reddit. there is also this other guy i trolled the shit out of in 2015 who still regularly tries to hassle me via sockpuppets, but i can always tell its him because of his autistic behavior patterns.

hold on lol this thread was about handguards
those cheesgraters ones - i guess they expect everyone to be thoroughly gloved at all times. maybe put a couple condoms over it if u want to barehand it. if ur wearing gloves get a tactical nosepicker for your rail, will help u keep the gloves on.

I am a big fan of these ladder rail covers for the cheesegrater rails. They are low profile and protect the rail and your hand.

I too love ladder rails (top).

The Faxon M-lok hand guard is really nice, I'm using the rifle Length (12") one on my semi-gucci upper (middle)

Also as far as cheese grater protection, the tried and true Knights Armament rail covers are top notch!

If you can save a bit more, take a look at the PRI carbon fiber hand guards as they are pricey, but really nice. I've got a Rifle length Delta on my long range(ish) AR build, and they are super nice.

Woah, I am loving that flat top mount free float setup, I like that setup because you don't have to buy a raiser for your red dot sight.

I see their gen 2 and 3 doesn't have the flat top mount.

Extra bonus for triangle tube
>> No. 106749 ID: 181cef
The flat top mount should be compatible, mine's a gen 2, but they've got top mounts for gen 3 as well.

>> No. 106750 ID: 988090
So that top rail piece is an add-on? So that top rail can go on any size just have to pick the right length, that's pretty cool
>> No. 106751 ID: 181cef
Yep, it attaches to the flat top of the upper receiver like the Vltor CASV, and attaches to the hand guard via screws and plates inside the hand guard. Needless to say it's easier to add the top rail when the hand guard is not attached to the rifle.
>> No. 106770 ID: 6ca38e
Love my BCM KMR handguard on my PBEAR MkII. Lightweight, not too thick, a good fit for my hands. They also have the Mlok MCMR now. Either should come in under your budget. Just I would suggest if you go with the KMR that you get the aluminum "Alpha" version rather than the magnesium alloy version. It's fine if you're not gonna put anything load bearing on it, but keymod is already weaker than mlok, no need to exacerbate the issue. (I know one OPERATOR who managed to rip off his vfg at the range with an original KMR)

>> No. 106978 ID: 974bbc
I don't see why it wouldn't be, but I'd probably not sand blast it since it's mostly carbon fiber. Scuff it up, clean it with denatured alcohol really well and then paint it. You could probably even oven cure it, but I've not attempted it on mine.
>> No. 106994 ID: 815268
Probably. You can get the tubes in black, tan, or green.

Mine isn't the CF version, but it's not smooth texture.
