Has anyone ever seen an Actuator like this before?

I've run a part that had a 90 degree curved bore (done with a reduced diameter ground shank ball nose undercutting endmill) on a 5 axis. Not sure if it was for a piston on a part for a satellite or for an ice cream spout designed by the average engineer but it is possible. We gauged it with a .7500" diameter spherical gauge and it held +0.0005/-0 the whole run.

My main question is why. Also it won't be cheap. It could be done pretty easily with a 4 axis, it'll be cheaper that way, but our part had weird angles and shit.

tl;dr I haven't seen something like that but it could be made. I wonder if a pipe and pipe bender could do it...

I don't need it to apply a serious amount of force. I'm thinking I could get away with a clamshell sort of assembly for the body.

It needs to fit in kind of a weird place where a rotary actuator won't do, and a straight piston won't fit.

This is why I like your experience WarPlan.
I was thinking about that actually + that thing where you shove a ball reamer through the tube and get your ID that way.

That actually was my first thought, lol.

Your biggest problem is it's not going to be a linear movement, it's goign to be a curved face movement, unless you add some linkages. What the fuck are you trying to do?

I know some people who design stuff for the medical sector. They made a flexible hydraulic actuator consisting of a silicon tube with a ball bearing at the end acting as the "piston" and the fluid being saline. The ball bearing actuates a grabber arm kind of like pic related. The actual "piston" is completely flexible, it can do an even more extreme U-turn than OP picture. It's meant to go in an artery for stent installation and other jobs.
I wish I had some pics, it's really neat. And I'm probably breaking rules by telling you guys so don't fucking spread it around or try to patent your own!

Too late, gears in my head are already spinning on patenting the metering pump you need to drive it. :P

That's actually exactly what gave me this Idea.

Turns out, there's an easier way to do that with mechanical linkages. (plus, you wouldn't want the labia minora getting clipped between the rod and seal.)

Alternatively, like my cancer seed source.
