For the winter I run studded snow tires on a set of steelies with about 500lbs of ballast just ever so slightly forward of the rear axle (look at your truck's MFG loading diagram for where you should put it for minimal effect on steering). I live in the mountains and we got ~8in a few weeks ago. Got around just fine in my 2007 Ram 1500 2wd v6 6spd manual.

I am thinking of investing in some new and "name" brand tire chains for next year and even upgrading to a torque sensing/biasing diff (torsen type, DD makes them for my platform) that way I don't have to gun it up the long and steep inclines around my house.
