After their replacement by the next gen bomber, the Pentagon is planning to modify the existing B-52s into something called an "arsenal plane".

The purpose of this beast is to drop thousands of glide bombs, or launch hundreds of cruise or even air-to-air missiles on command from anyone else in the battlespace.

You know how the AWACS supplements search and track systems? The Arsenal Plane basically supplements weapons loadouts.

If a flight of strike fighters runs out of bombs (very likely in the case of F-35), they don't have to return to base, rearm, and potentially miss their strike opportunity.

They can just order up some fresh bombs from the Arsenal Plane, if they get there in 30 seconds or less it's free.

Actually dates to an older concept of a cruise missile/microfighter mothership.

The idea of using Boeing 747, or other similar commercial passenger jumbo jets, as a missile truck or air-launched cruise missile launcher has been around for a long time.

Or as a method of extending the range of ballistic missiles. You fly a cargo of ICBMs and drop them out the back where they (hopefully) ignite and rocket off to their target. Same idea of getting space orbiters or satellites out to their orbit where their rockets just would not have enough push to make it. Load the rocket in a 747 and fly it to maximum altitude. The maximum operating altitude of a 747-400 is 41,000 feet with an absolute ceiling 45,100 feet.

Anti-submarine patrol planes have been armed with Harpoon anti-ship missiles and Sidewinder air-to-air missiles as well as torpedoes and sonar buoys.

Does the conflation of "Arsenal" and "Armory" bother anyone else? This concept is clearly a flying weapons armory, not a flying weapons manufacturing and storage.

None of the article seem to mention the wild weasel functionality that would be needed on the strike fighters in order to make the most of this concept.
