I don't know how many people know of this games existence but its essentially a large BF2 mod that implements some ultra-realistic components into a massive (2-5km) maps that allows for some large scale warfare. The community is very much still alive usually with a full server in either PvP or Cooperative. Loads of fun, and nobody can appreciate it as much as OPERATORs.

The mod itself is free and is about 6GB.

To be fair, Insurgency has always been a shit game mode that is impossible to balance.

The problem is that, primarily because of the spawn mechanics, squad coordination isn't a high priority. Spawn on a cache, camp a window and mow down some imperialists, and as long as the blufor team isn't working like a well-oiled machine then you're probably set.

A better insurgency mode would just be regular AAS with weapon cache side objectives to drain tickets faster, but not required. But having weapon caches as the primary objective is just fucking dumb, you'd never throw away hundreds of lives just to brute force your way inside some house to knock out a fucking RPG crate. It allows the Ins team to play completely defensively, so it's like playing Counter-Strike or some BS, with an arbitrary objective and a boring offense/defense team setup.

Which is why I'm scared for Squad or whatever that successor game is, because it looks like they're just going full-steam-ahead in the Ins department which has always been PRs weakest offering by a long shot.

Right. What this team fails to grasp time and again is to be a "game", any sort of game, be it a sport, boardgame, pnp, etc. there has to be a rule set that makes sense and you have to streamline realism and challenge with gameplay.

When you ramp up the complexity, you also ramp up the tediousness of gameplay and the learning curve. Essentially these guys have worked themselves into a corner, and are trying to sell Axis and Allies to RISK players, or Settlers of Catan is to Monopoly players(ie the CoD and Battlefield crowd).

Add in their limited abilities of the team and their refusal to address core brainstorming problems with the game and rules, like Insurgency mode, the game gets in the way of the game itself.

It's like when I would try and play Axis and Allies with my old group of friends and stuff; everyone would be on their cellphone and not paying attention, some guys would take forever and so on, insist they knew the rules then tried to do things that were against the rules, and after 3 hours we'd made one complete round of turns.

Ive backed two. One turned out to be massively successful and some of you have probably played the end product (Path of Exile).

  Advance Wars for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance was a good turn-based strategy game for that old handheld. Played it a lot on the flip-screen GBA-SP (a new one sells for around $500 on Amazon!).

Too bad they did not have anything really comparable for the Sony PSP, aside from Field Commander, Metal Gear Acid, Final Fantasy Tactics and a whole lot of turn-based RPGs.

One thing you can say about Fallout 4 compared to Fallout 3 is its tries far more to connect to earlier games. From things like company name, like Poseidon Energy and Wattz, to mentioning Shady Sands and the NCR. Spoiler alert but the character Kellogg actually is from the NCR, during a flashback they have on the radio the forming of the NCR and later have him working for the Shi in San Fran with the Golden Gate bridge shown.

The X-01 power armor is the just the MK1 Enclave Power armor (even though I would have preferred the Beth style MK2 or the glorious Hellfire). Alongside that Enclave reference they reference the Oil Rig. There are a few references to New Vegas including a mention of Fixer, some of the Nuka Cola's from that game being mentioned and apparently returning in Nuka World, the crazy scientist guy mentioning wanting to dig up cities in the Mojave (not meaning Vegas though, ancient alien cities, you know I'm sure I would have noticed those tromping around the Mojave but maybe I didn't have high enough Perception) and the New Vegas sign appearing in the Atomic Command game (not the Las Vegas, the post war New Vegas, thus confirming in the Fallout universe game mods exist).

Certainly an improvement from Fallout 3 where they practically tried to act like the previous games didn't exist even though they referenced Fallout Tactics.

I like it but it seems to have dwindled in playercount a lot since the end of summer. Seemed like for a few weeks in July and August you had +30 every day, now it only reaches peak on Friday/Saturday/Sunday and for a match or two.

I'm looking for a group right now to augment UO, it's fun but I find it's empty when I am hankering for some Arma. Problem is finding one that isn't full on autismal with the whole OOC ranking.

I played through it and like it. The Metro games are pretty awesome anyway. Metro Redux of 2033 fixes some minor things and has fewer load screens where they combined several levels. Looks a bit better and seems to run a bit better then the original.

Don't know what the difference between Last Light original and Redux is though.

Overall some fantastic games and probably the closest we are getting to sequels to Stalker. Though anyone going into the game should be aware while there are many similarities (some of the people who worked on Stalker formed 4A games and the novels the games are based on are kinda similar to Roadside Picnic) the gameplay is pretty different, Metro being a linear shooter compared to Stalker's open world design.

Probably the only thing bad about it is it along with Stalker has inspired some chav ass motherfuckers in Russia to completely fuck up some old bunkers and underground storerooms.

Metro 2033 was great. I ended up playing through it several times, Redux is essentially the director's cut edition and fixes a lot of bullshit like the Amoebas.

Last Light, I dunno. I played through it once and didn't feel any inclination to go back to it. It felt kinda like a "Red Dawn 2", something that missed the point of the original property. Or like how the two sequels to "Jarhead" are direct-to-DVD action movies.

The biggest improvement I noticed in Last Light Redux (never got around to finishing it, like you said it wasn't as good as 2033) was that they actually made Ranger mode playable. In the original release, there was no way to check your supplies at all, for some stupid reason. In Redux they add that to the journal screen, where it was in 2033.

Ever play Avalon Hill's solitaire game, B-17: Queen of the Skies (1981)? An interesting game where you fly your fortress to a target and back. Drive off enemy fighters and withstand flak over the target. Mechanical systems get damaged, crew get incapacitated, ammo runs low, oil leaks, engine fires, and all manner of unfortunate things can occur (such as dropping out of formation) as your mission drags on. Get back safely and continue to hopefully complete 25 missions to get you that ticket home.

B-17: Queen of the Skies is a strategy game which re-creates the early bombing missions and aerial combat of the B-17 (F Model) bombers of the US Eighth Air Force over Europe between October 1942 and May 1943. Movement to targets is through zones. Die rolls and game tables determine appearance, type, and position of enemy fighters. Charts are used to determine if hits are made, where the damage is located, and how serious the damage is. Game tables and die rolls also determine everything from the bomber's target and formation position to weather, flak, and German fighter opposition as the B-17 makes its way over land and sea to its target.

The game has a low complexity and typically, the playing time is generally less than one hour after your first few games.

B-17 is designed to be primarily a solitaire game. The player controls a B-17F Flying Fortress bomber, trying to survive German fighter attacks and drop its load of bombs on the selected target, then return home safely. Optionally, a second player can control the German fighters (to some degree; their appearance is determined randomly, but successive attacks are under the control of the German player). If each player has their own copy of B-17, then they can fly their bomber while playing the German fighters in their partner's game.

Interesting instructional training video on bomber crew flying evasive maneuvers in order to avoid anti-aircraft artillery fire. I remember reading interviews with older pilots who were flying bombing missions during the '91 Gulf War who also flew 20+ years previously in the Vietnam War. They could actually maneuver their nimble F-16 Falcons away from flak artillery shells that they saw. And when other attack aircraft flew effective flak and SAM suppression ahead of the bombers, the anti-aircraft problems quickly dwindled away.

Anybody else playing Battleborn? Just picked it up and tried a couple story missions, it's pretty fun. Pretty good mix of Borderlands-style co-op shooter with MOBA elements.
